Butokukan karate is a style of karate training with direct lineage to karate as it developed in Okinawa in the 19th century. The basic elements of Butokukan karate can be divided into 3 components: kata, self-defense, and sparring.
Kata are sets of prearranged moves related to fighting. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, one can develop a graceful, potent manner of movement. Each kata is comprised of a series of actions which produce fluid and grounded delivery of powerful techniques with hands and feet.
Butokukan karate has earned a reputation for providing highly effective self-defense skills. Butokukan karate classes train students to successfully deal with a range of threats.
Sport sparring in Butokukan karate is a way for students to practice combat skills in a safe and controlled manner. Our martial arts classes help students learn to move with speed and timing for optimal use of striking and kicking.
Throughout human history, villages, tribes, city states, cultures, and civilizations have included individuals with martial training tasked with protecting their people. Karate training has been employed for centuries to keep the inhabitants of what is now Okinawa and Japan safe from intruders. A warrior class skilled in the use of hands and feet for self -defense developed.
Over the course of the past two centuries in particular, multiple styles of karate have formed. This evolution has taken place largely as a result of influences from other martial arts, teachers’ specific skill sets, and improved training methods for effective self-defense. Butokukan is one such karate style that grew out of the original Okinawan karate.
In 1959, Master Oichi Nakachi moved to Seattle from Japan. By 1963, Master Nakachi had opened two Butokukan dojos, one in Seattle and another in Bremerton. Before Master Nakachi returned to Japan in 1965, he appointed senior black belt Robert Hill to continue the tradition of excellence in Butokukan karate.
The Silverdale Butokukan dojo was established in 1986. Today, all the Silverdale Butokukan instructors have trained directly under Soke (grandmaster) Robert Hill and are dedicated to carrying on his life’s work to train and teach karate to the highest standards of excellence. As a measure of their success, Silverdale Butokukan is widely regarded as the premier Butokukan karate dojo in the Pacific Northwest.
